How to Keep Your Hair Healthy and Bright After 60

Healthy hair doesn’t stop with age: Best Hair Care Over 60

I had always been proud of my thick, long hair. It was one of those features that felt like a part of my identity. So, when I started noticing more strands in the drain than on my head, panic set in. I tried extensions to recreate my old look, but they only made things worse. Finally, after much trial and error and sheer desperation, I did something radical—I listened to my hairstylist.

She convinced me to stop fighting my hair and start taking care of it properly. And you know what? She was right. So, if you’re struggling with aging hair, thinning strands, or just feeling a little lost in the hair department, here are the best tips I’ve learned to help you love your locks again.

Embracing the Hair You Have

The first step in loving your hair over 60? Accepting that it’s changed. And that’s okay! Hair naturally thins, loses pigment, and changes in texture as we age. Instead of mourning the hair of our youth, let’s focus on making the hair we have now look (and feel) its best.

Hair Care Routine for Aging Hair

  • Less is More – Overwashing can strip hair of its natural oils, making it dry and brittle. Aim for washing 2-3 times a week with a hydrating shampoo. Try this sulfate-free shampoo.
  • Choose the Right Products – Sulfate-free shampoos, lightweight conditioners, and products with biotin and keratin can help strengthen thinning hair. I love this Biotin Conditioner
  • Deep conditioning is Your Best Friend – Weekly deep conditioning treatments or masks can bring back moisture and shine. I use a conditioning mask my hairdresser makes called Queen Bee, but another favorite is this Kerastase mask.
  • Treat Your Scalp Like Royalty – A healthy scalp = healthier hair. Scalp massages, gentle cleansing, and lightweight serums can stimulate hair growth. This scalp massager is a game- changer!
  • Be Gentle – Say no to tight ponytails, rough brushing, and excessive heat styling. Opt for wide-tooth combs, microfiber towels, and air drying whenever possible.
  • Protect Your Hair from the Sun – UV rays can weaken hair strands. Use a protective spray or wear a hat when you’re out in the sun for long periods. This UV hair protector is a must-have!

Hair Care Mistakes to Ditch for Healthier Locks

Let’s talk about some of the hair mistakes I used to make (and maybe you do too!):

  • Heat Styling Every Day – I was guilty of frying my hair daily. Now, I use heat sparingly and always apply a heat protectant. Try this heat protectant spray
  • Skipping Trims – I used to avoid trims, thinking they’d make my hair shorter. But regular trims actually help prevent breakage and make hair look healthier.
  • Overusing Extensions – Trust me, if your hair is thinning, it will only make things worse. Instead, focus on scalp health and gentle styling techniques.
  • Brushing Wet Hair – Wet hair is fragile! Use a wide-tooth comb or a detangling brush to prevent breakage.
  • Ignoring Hydration – Dry hair is brittle hair. Hydrating both inside and out is essential for maintaining shine and elasticity.

Tips for Dealing with Thinning Hair

If you’re like me and miss your thick hair, here are some things that have helped:

  • Nourish From the Inside – A balanced diet rich in protein, healthy fats, and vitamins (especially biotin and omega-3s) can help support hair growth.
  • Go for a Volumizing Cut – My stylist recommended layers and a slightly shorter style to create the illusion of fullness. It made a world of difference!
  • Scalp Massages & Treatments – A healthy scalp leads to healthy hair. I use a scalp-stimulating brush and nourishing scalp oils to encourage growth. It stimulates hair growth. Try this scalp oil
  • Stay Hydrated – Hydrated bodies lead to hydrated hair. Drinking plenty of water throughout the day helps keep your hair from becoming dry and brittle.
  • Use the Right Hair Products – Not all hair products are created equal. Look for products that are free of harsh chemicals and are specially formulated for mature hair. Look for shampoos and conditioners that focus on hydrating and revitalizing your locks.
  • Consider Supplements – Collagen and biotin supplements can provide the extra boost your hair needs if your diet is lacking in hair-supporting nutrients. This supplement has worked wonders!
  • Satin Pillowcase: While not technically a tool, a satin pillowcase can greatly benefit your hair. It reduces friction as you sleep, resulting in less hair breakage and frizz. Plus, it feels luxurious! Try this satin pillowcase

Final Thoughts

It took me a while to get here, but I can finally say I love my hair again—not because it’s the same as it was in my 20s, but because I’ve learned how to care for it in a way that makes it look and feel its best. Aging doesn’t mean giving up on feeling beautiful; It just means adapting, learning, and finding new ways to feel like the best version of yourself.
